How to use the app

Every clip below is real video of the app, recorded on a Fire TV while the remote was pressed. Nothing here is a drawing of what it should look like. Each one is under a minute, and each says what to do on a TV remote and what to do on a phone, because they are not the same.

  1. Install the app with Downloader by AFTVnews

The code does the typing. No web address, no keyboard dance.

Install the app with Downloader by AFTVnews, shown on the app

    Code 1552690
    On a TV

Open Downloader by AFTVnews on the Fire TV, type 1552690 in the box and choose Go. The file downloads by itself; choose Install. When it finishes, restart the Fire TV once (Settings, My Fire TV, Restart), then open Lumo TV.

    On a phone or tablet

On a phone or an Android box, open lumotv.app/app.apk in the browser, then open the file it saved and install it. On an Android box, restart it once before you open the app.

Downloader by AFTVnews is free in the Amazon Appstore: search for Downloader and pick the orange one by AFTVnews. If the Fire TV refuses to install, allow Downloader under Settings, My Fire TV, Developer options, Install unknown apps, then try again. The restart after installing is worth the minute: it stops the freezing and buffering some people see on the first day.

  2. Sign in to your server

The app asks for this once. After that it opens straight into the channels.

Portals, Ruby Server, the six digit code, and the TV signing itself in once we had the code.
    Nothing to type?
    On a TV

Open the app and choose Ruby Server (it is under Portals in the menu), then type the username and password we sent you.

    On a phone or tablet

Same screen on a phone: tap Ruby Server, then tap each box to type.

The screen shows a six digit code. Send us that code on WhatsApp and we sign you in from our side, so you type nothing on the TV at all.

  3. Find Movies, Series and Sports

This is the one people miss. The menu is hidden until you ask for it.

    LEFT twice
    On a TV

Press LEFT once for the channel groups, and LEFT again for the menu that holds Live TV, Movies, Series, Sports and Radio.

    On a phone or tablet

On a phone there is no LEFT key. Tap the Menu button at the bottom left of the screen instead.

That second press is the one that catches people out. One press gets you the channel groups, which look like the whole menu but are not.

  4. Watch four channels at once

Built for a Sunday with four games on. Films can join in too.

Two channels: on a channel, the menu button, Multi screen, then Add screen.
Two films: on a film, Multi screen next to Play, then Add movie.
Watch four channels at once, shown on the app
A film and a channel: Multi screen on the film, then Add screen.
    MENU or hold OK
    On a TV

On a channel, press the menu button on the remote, or hold OK, then choose Multi screen. On a film, choose Multi screen next to Play. Then press OK on a screen and choose Add screen for another channel or Add movie for a film.

    On a phone or tablet

Press and hold a channel and choose Multi screen, or tap Multi screen next to Play on a film. Tap a screen to add another channel or a film.

Each screen is a separate stream, so two screens use two of your connections and four use four. With one connection, add more before you try it.

  5. Keep your channels together

So you are not scrolling past 20,000 channels to reach the six you watch.

On a channel: the menu button, Add to Favourites, then the Favorites group at the top.
    Hold OK
    On a TV

On a channel, press the menu button or hold OK, then choose Add to Favourites. Your favourites sit in their own group at the top of the list.

    On a phone or tablet

Press and hold the channel, then choose Add to Favourites.

Favourites stay where they are when the app updates. They are only lost if you uninstall it.

  6. Pause and rewind live TV

    Yes, on live channels.

    OK, then pause
    On a TV

While a channel is playing full screen, press OK to bring up the controls, then press OK on pause. Press play to carry on from where you stopped.

    On a phone or tablet

Tap the picture to bring up the controls, then tap pause.

How far back you can go depends on the channel. Most of ours keep the last few hours, and the guide shows what has already been on.

  7. Record a programme

Keep a show for later, on the device itself.

Real video of the app on a Fire TV, driven by the remote.
    MENU, then Record
    On a TV

On a channel, press the menu button on the remote, or hold OK, then choose Record. It records the programme that is on now, or the next hour on a channel without a guide. Your recordings are in the menu under Recordings.

    On a phone or tablet

Press and hold a channel, then choose Record. Tap Menu, then Recordings, to find it.

A recording uses one of your connections while it runs, like an extra screen in Multi screen. The file is saved on the device, so it plays back even after the channel has moved on.
